U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, M.D. joins your family dentist in endorsing community water fluoridation.
Specifically, on April 22 U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, M.D. offered her support for fluoridation in municipal water supplies via a letter read at the opening ceremony at the National Oral Health Conference in Huntsville, Alabama.
In the letter she stated the water fluoridation is “one of the most effective choices communities can make to prevent health problems while actually improving the oral health of their citizens.” She went on to say that fluoridation’s effectiveness impacts all ages – not just children. This results in fewer and less severe cavities. “In fact,” she said, “each generation born since the implementation of water fluoridation has enjoyed better dental health than the generation that preceded it.”
Dr. Benjamin’s sentiments echo those of all surgeon generals over the past 50 years who have supported community water fluoridation as a safe and effective way to prevent tooth decay.
They also mirror the views of your family dentist, who strongly supports the use of fluoride to maintain optimal oral health. (For many decades now the American Dental Association has also endorsed community water fluoridation.)
And while community water fluoridation is a proven measure that provides a safe, effective way to prevent dental decay, you should also supplement your fluoride intake by brushing with a good fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day. And, of course, don’t forget periodic fluoride treatments at your family dentist during your regular twice-per-year visits.
